PURPOSE: A centrifugal upflow type sand filter is provided which removes necessity for backwashing filter particle materials by using the centrifugal force of fluid and effectively performs mixing, circulation and separation of the particle materials and suspended solids in water. CONSTITUTION: The centrifugal upflow type sand filter comprises a filter containing tank(20) in which a filter for filtering wastewater is contained, at upper one side part of which an overflow weir(21) for discharging filtered water is installed, and at a lower part of which a filter drain pipe(22) is installed; a cylindrical centrifugal force generation part(10) which is positioned at the lower center of the filter containing tank, from the side surface of which a wastewater inflow pipe is eccentrically penetrated, and in which a plurality of baffles(18) are formed in a wastewater flow direction; a cylindrical contaminant removing part(27) in which a contaminant transfer shaft(30) is contained in such a way that a spiral is formed on an outer part of the contaminant transfer shaft to remove contaminants from contaminated filter lifted from the centrifugal force generation part, and on the outer circumferential surface of which a spiral is formed oppositely to the above spiral direction; a funnel shaped distributor(25) positioned between the centrifugal force generation part and the contaminant removing part to guide the contaminated filter lifted from the centrifugal force generation part to the contaminant removing part; a filtered water chamber(35) comprising a filtered water circulation pipe(36) an inlet of which is positioned on the same line as the overflow weir for discharging filtered water; a filter cleaner(37) comprising a sludge discharge pipe an inlet of which is installed at a position lower than the level of water in the filtered water chamber, wherein an outlet of the filtered water circulation pipe is installed at a lower part of the filter cleaner to clean the contaminant separated filter using filtered water supplied through the filtered water circulation pipe from the filtered water chamber; and an air lifting pipe(44) connected to the filtered water chamber through a lower part of the filter cleaner to lift the filter to the filter cleaner by operating an air lifting pump.
