The adapter has an inverter (1) with switches in series connected to a d.c. voltage source (UBUS) and connected in an anti-phase manner. The inverter is connected to a load circuit (5) containing the lamp (6) and a series resonant circuit. The method involves rectifying the lamp current and charging a storage capacitor to provide a d.c. voltage. It also involves limiting the storage capacitor charging voltage.
