The invention relates to telephone instruments used in telephone booths and motor vehicles. The device includes a housing (1) enclosing the telephone instrument (2). The moving part (16) of the housing (1) positions the handset (167) by the use of an articulated arm (165) under a canopy (161) forming the variable-geometry assembly (160), which provides the physical protection for the instrument (2) and the user. The device is put into use by means of a key (19) which controls the circuit providing for unhooking and replacing of the instrument (2) as well as the opening and closing of the moving part (16) of the housing (2). The device according to the invention is particularly intended to simplify telephone booths. The variable-geometry assembly (160) can be used on radio telephones installed in motor vehicles, in order to set up hands-free communication, thus avoiding many accidents. <IMAGE>
