PURPOSE: A method for operating a wireless LAN card in a wireless LAN system is provided to connect with a destination terminal one to one in an ed-hoc mode, and to perform data communication through a frequency channel according to settings of an access point in an infrastructure mode, thereby using the wireless LAN card in any nations. CONSTITUTION: A system sets values corresponding to all channels in a record(101). If a wireless LAN card is initialized, the system checks whether a working mode of the card is an ed-hoc mode or an infrastructure mode(102,103). If the mode is the infrastructure mode, the system scans a frequency band of an allowed channel, and retrieves the channel(106). The system receives a beacon signal to analyze the signal(107), and checks an SSID(Service Set Identifier) of the beacon signal to decide whether an access point whose SSID is not open exists(108). If so, the system transmits a probe request packet to the access point(113). The system stands by to receive a response(114). If a probe response is delivered from the access point having the same SSID, the system receives the response(115). If a connection is completed, the system performs data communication with the access point through an obtained channel(116,117).
