PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for controlling a microwave oven for preventing water for boiling rice from overflowing while cooking rice in a rice bowl to speed up the cooking and steaming. SOLUTION: The microwave oven comprises a cooking chamber in which a cooked material is stored, a cooling fan for circulating air, a magnetron for generating high frequency waves, and a humidity sensor for sensing the humidity in the cooking chamber. The method of controlling the microwave oven comprises a step of setting a cooking command, a step of a first cooking while preventing water for cooking from boiling and overflowing by controlling the output of the magnetron according to the cooking command, a step of setting a second cooking time according to the time necessary for the first cooking, and a step of a second cooking in the second cooking time while controlling the output of the magnetron to reduce the second cooking time by speedily cooking the cooked material.
