PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem that an oxygen pump element is operated at high temperature, so that electric power required for heating is large, and it is damaged due to cracks caused by the large temperature distribution when heated. SOLUTION: A heating means 29 is placed facing at least one side of dividing means 28 dividing electrodes formed on both sides of an oxygen pump element 21. These are surrounded by permeable heat insulating materials 33 and 34. This improves the thermal efficiency of the heating means 29 for heating the oxygen pump element 21, reducing the electric power required for heating. It also provides a uniform temperature distribution within the oxygen pump element 21, which prevents damages such as cracks and improves the durability and reliability. COPYRIGHT: (C)2003,JPO
