PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating method by which coating is stably started up with a simple structure and a coating film is successively formed so as to hardly cause defects in the method for forming the coating film on a long and wide sized coating film surface by applying various liquid compositions on a continuously traveling web. SOLUTION: This coating method is performed by continuously traveling the long sized web 12 along a web traveling passage formed by a plurality of web guide rollers 22 and applying a coating liquid 20 on one of surfaces of the web 12 stretched between the guide rollers 22 by a coating means 14. The coating means 14 is constituted so that a prescribed distance is provided between the web 12 and the tip of a coating head 16, the coating liquid 20 is supplied from the coating head to form a coating layer on the surface of the web and just after that, the excess coating liquid is scraped by a rod like member 18 to form the coating layer 24 having a prescribed thickness, and when the coating is started, the distance between the web 12 and the tip of the coating head 16 is temporarily decreased than a prescribed distance to bring the web into contact with the coating liquid, and then, the coating is started.
