PURPOSE: An IP route monitoring method in an 3G UMTS(3rd Generation Universal Mobile Telecommunication System) network is provided to prevent a packet transmission processing delay and failure factor by periodically monitoring signals and traffic IP routes between an SGSN(Serving UMTS Support Node) and plural GGSNs(Gateway UMTS Support Node). CONSTITUTION: It is checked whether a monitor timer is released(S31). If the monitor timer is released, a ping message, by which whether an IP node is normal can be recognized with an IP address of the next hop router, is transmitted to a GGSN(S32). It is judged whether a response to the ping message has been received from the GGSN(S33). If the ping message has been received from the GGSN, a route monitor timer is reset(S34). If no response to the ping message is received from the ping message, a route is changed(S35) and data are transmitted through the changed route(S36).
