Load carrier of roll-on type (100), comprising a load carrying structure (20) and a frame (120) with gripping means (50) at the front end, the gripping means (50) being adapted to enable loading of the load carrier (100) with a self-loading vehicle. The frame is modified such that the gripping means (50) are arranged on a sub-frame (130) that is extendable with respect to the front end of the load carrying structure (20), and that it comprises sub-frame securing means (150) for securing the sub-frame (130) with respect to the frame (120) and the load carrying structure(20), in at least one extended state and one fully retracted state, such that a load carrier with a short load carrying structure can be handled by normal length self-loading vehicles. The invention further comprises a method of transfer-loading a load carrier (100) of roll-on type from a self-loading vehicle to a railroad carriage (110). <IMAGE>
