PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic detection element, together with its manufacturing method, which is excellent in reproduction characteristics and is capable of appropriately controlling magnetization of a free magnetic layer even at narrowing a track. SOLUTION: A second antiferromagnetic layer 31 is formed on a free magnetic layer 28, on which a thin non-magnetic layer 32 formed of Ru, etc., is provided. A third antiferromagnetic layer 33 is formed on both side edges C of the free magnetic layer 28 with the non-magnetic layer 32 in between. Since the both side edges C of the second antiferromagnetic layer 31 is antiferromagnetic, the magnetization at both side edges C of the free magnetic layer 28 is strongly fixed. A central part D of the second antiferromagnetic layer 31 is non antiferromagnetic, and the central part D of the free magnetic layer 28 is magnetized into a single magnetic domain which is week enough to allow magnetization inversion relative to an external magnetic field. |
