The auger (1) consists of a cylindrical shaft (2) with at least one spiral blade (3) round it, and an end plate (4) in the form of a portion of a disc fixed to the shaft perpendicular to its axis. It has a second plate (6), also in the shape of a portion of a disc and equipped with a cutter (7). The two disc portions are shaped so that in one position they extract material from the bored hole as the blade is rotated, and in another they form a complete disc and isolate the bottom of the hole from the material already on the blade.
