PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a garbage volume reducing device suitable for use at a home kitchen. SOLUTION: A garbage volume reducing device 2 mounted to a kitchen sink 1 has a composition in which there are provided a collecting vessel 6 installed at a drain outlet 20 of the kitchen sink 1, a bottomed cylindrical piston 4 which is pushed into the collecting vessel 6 from an outer case 3 to reduce the volume of the garbage in the collecting vessel, a spring 15 for pulling back the piston 4, a city water faucet 10 for opening/closing the city water 11 to a pressure chamber 19 formed between the outer case 3 and the piston 4, and a drain throttling part 14 for letting the water in the pressure chamber 19 escape and in which the operation of the piston 4 is controlled only by the turning on/off operation of the city water faucet 10.
