The height adjustable bumps, primarily for installing in roads to selectively imparting a jolt to a passing road vehicle, comprise deflectable elements 1,2 which are pivotally mounted and which mesh with a third static element 3. The pivotable elements can be locked in a first position by latch 9 so that the upper surfaces of the elements 1,2 are flush with the surface of the road so that vehicle wheels are not deflected. When the latch 9 is released, the pivotable elements are deflected by wheels passing overhead so that they form a dip and a hump, with latch 10 then locking the pivotable elements in this second position so as to impart a jolt to passing vehicles. The latches may be operated by actuators 11,12 which in turn may be controlled by computer or other suitable devices. |
