The invention relates to a device for digitally signing an electronic document by means of a signature writing unit which is protected against manipulation. Said unit is provided with a data processing device which makes said document available and which is embodied in such a way as to place a secret, access-protected digital signature key. The signature writing unit comprises a directly associated output unit which is not influenced by the data processing device for issuing an output signal for a user of the data processing device, and a user input must take place in a reaction to the output signal before the digital signature is produced and/or transmitted to the data processing device.
