A method of manufacturing metal iron capable of increasing the operation rat e and maintainability of a hearth and being adapted to a long term continuous operation by allowing metal iron powder to be easily removed and the surface of the hearth to be easily repaired even if the metal iron powder is buried in the surface of the hearth or the surface is subjected to the invasion or erosion of slag in the production of the metal iron where a mixture containi ng carbonaceous reducer and iron oxide is fed onto the hearth of a movable floo r type reducing melting furnace and heated to melt the iron oxide for reductio n, and the metal iron thus obtained is cooled and discharged to the outside of the furnace for collection, comprising the steps of forming a renewable hear th by laying down hearth materials on the hearth in layer form before the mixtu re is supplied thereto and renewing a part or all of the renewed hearth deteriorated in the operation by using the hearth materials.
