METHOD FOR PRODUCING 2-HYDROXYCARBOXYLIC AMIDE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydration process that can produce 2-hydroxycarboxylic and is applicable to 2-hydroxynitriles of a variety of carbon numbers bearing various substituents and can produce the corresponding 2-hydroxycarboxylic amides from the 2-hydroxynitriles of the variety of carbon numbers bering various substituents in high yields in the all cases. SOLUTION: The 2-hydroxynitrile represented by the formula (1): R<1> -CR<2> (OH)- CN (where R<1> and R<2> are each H, a 1-10C aliphatic hydrocarbon group or an aromatic group) and sulfuric acid are allowed to react with each other characteristically as the water content is maintained to <=20 mass % and the reaction temperature is controlled to <=80 deg.C, whereby the objective hydroxycarboxylic amide represented by the formula (2): R<1> -CR<2> (OH)-CONH<2> (where R<1> and R<2> have each same meaning as stated above) is obtained.
