The method involves using a system which has a group of mobile transponders. A station (1) emits an interrogate signal which is converted into an information response signal in one of the transponders (2) with a SAW element (18), which is then sent back to the interrogate station (1). The SAW element provides a position code by generating a fixed number of identifying response signal components with code specific propagation delay or frequency shift. In each time or frequency window precisely one time slot or frequency slot of a response signal component is contained. In order to carry out calibration or measurement of the response signal, its component is contained with a fixed position within a previously defined time or frequency window.
