The method involves setting a gas/air ratio to a suitable value in accordance with signals of an ionization electrode supplied via an electricity supply. The electrode applies a parameter derived from a combustion temperature or lambda value to a regulating circuit (R) that compares it with a desired value and adjusts it. The supply voltage applied between the conductor (L1) and the protective conductor (PE) is detected and used in regulating the gas/air ratio.
