PURPOSE: A handoff method of a mobile communication system is provided to distinguish cell areas of a base station installed with a smart antenna, and to perform handoff by distinguishing areas accessible to other cell or sector, thereby improving capacity and speech quality of a WCDMA base station. CONSTITUTION: A base station receives a signal to configure a signal vector, and estimates an incident angle of the signal(300,301). A terminal decides whether a handoff area exists between sectors, between cells, and between three cells(302a,302b,302c). If the handoff area exists between the sectors, the terminal measures a signal strength of other sector to understand mobility of the terminal in the area(303a), and decides whether the terminal moves to the other sector(304a). If so, handoff is performed between the sectors(305a). If the handoff area exists between two cells, the terminal measures a signal strength of other cell to understand mobility in the area(304b), and decides whether the terminal moves to the other cell(304b). If so, handoff is performed between the two cells(305b). If the handoff area exists between the three cells, the terminal measures a signal strength of other two cells to understand mobility(304c), and decides whether the terminal moves to the other cell(304c). If so, handoff is performed(305c).
