PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably align booklets even if a stage difference exists between right and left pages in relation to the center of the booklet. SOLUTION: A sensor P1 detects the carrying directional length of the booklets (step S5). The sensors P1 and P5 detect position of the booklets (steps S5, S7, S11, S13) to control a carrying roller. A first and a second counters count the number of pulses of a motor for driving the carrying roller (steps S6 and S12), and computing is performed on the basis of the count value (steps S8 and S14), and the booklets are carried to the booklet aligning operation starting position and stopped there in the condition that the center of a spread of the booklet is displaced from an alignment roller at the starting position.
