The body of plastics material is used in a bacterial bed of a biological purification installation and is of any shape, e.g. hollow or flat, in the form of balls, pieces of tube, cubes etc. having regular or irregular surfaces. The plastics material may be a foam or not, but the closed cells or the cellular skin is torn or roughened by mechanical or chemical treatment to enable optimum adhesive of microorganisms on the surface of the body. The material is disposed in a bed in such a way as to permit the flow of dirty water and the passage of air. The internal cells of the body remain closed so that water cannot penetrate into the body.
