PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal composition containing a dichroic colorant having a high order parameter; and a liquid crystal element containing the same. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal composition contains a compound having a molecular structure formed by linking a plurality of chromophoric groups comprising basic nuclei and acidic nuclei. Preferably, the compound is one represented by formula (1): A1-L1-D1-S1-D2-L2-A2 (wherein D1 and D2 are each a basic nucleus; L1 and L2 are each a conjugated chain; A1 and A2 are each an acidic nucleus; and S1 is a single bond or a linking group). Still preferably, the compound is one represented by formula (2) (wherein X1 to X4 are each 0 or S; R1 to R8 are each a substituent; R9 to R12 are each an alkyl or aryl group provided R9 may combine with R10 to form a ring, and so may R11 with R12; and S1 is a single bond or a linking group).
