PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a planar optical waveguide element using landmarks. SOLUTION: A planar optical waveguide element 30 has landmarks 32 at constant intervals at specific positions within permissible tolerance from a processing section 30a of the plane optical waveguide element 30 so as to improve the uniformity of a coupling loss that occurs when the planar optical waveguide element 30 and an optical fiber block are aligned and adhered. Further, the landmarks 32 are arrayed in the planar optical waveguide element 30 so as to evaluate the permissible tolerance and numbers or symbols are displayed so as to distinguish the landmarks 32.
