Means for replacing hyaline cartilage that is capable of self-assembly in the absence of covalent cross-linking. Further, aggregates of the means are biphasic, containing both peptide and water. The means comprises one or more than one polypeptide having a sequence according to SEQ ID NO:1, SEQ ID NO:2 or SEQ ID NO:3, or comprises a sequence where one or more than one amino acid is conservatively substituted, or where one or more than one amino acid is substituted to promote cross-linking between individual polypeptides.
