PURPOSE: A navigation system of a vehicle and a method for controlling the same are provided to output a guide voice to a driver in a railway crossing as well as crossroads by improving a structure of a navigation system. CONSTITUTION: A GPS(Global Positioning System) receiver(10) receives radio frequencies from a multitude of GPS artificial satellite, produces a three-dimensional location of a vehicle by using the received radio frequencies, and provides location information to a control portion(30). An azimuth sensor portion(20) detects an azimuth of the vehicle and provides azimuth data to the control portion(30). The control portion(30) reads road map data from a data storage portion(40) according to current coordinates of the vehicle and traveling direction of the vehicle and displays the read data to a display portion(50) or performs a voice guide operation to a voice guide portion(60). The data storage portion(40) stores the road map data and positions of railway crossings.
