PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for controlling the brightness of the display part of a moving picture terminal is provided to automatically and optimally adjust the brightness of the LCD of a moving picture terminal by detecting the brightness of an external light through an image sensor and controlling the power of an LCD LED(Light Emitting Diode) or a keypad LED. CONSTITUTION: A moving picture terminal judges whether a moving picture call is selected(S11). If the moving picture call is selected, the moving picture terminal sets a threshold and a check period(S12). If the first check period comes(S14), the moving picture terminal reads an AGC(Auto Gain Control) value(S15). The moving picture terminal compares the read AGC value with the threshold(S16). In case that the AGC value exceeds the threshold, the moving picture terminal turns off an LCD(S17). However, if the AGC value is less than the threshold, the moving picture terminal turns on the LCD(S18). Then the moving picture terminal judges whether an AGC variation is larger than a preset variation width(S19). If the AGC variation is larger than the preset variation width, the moving picture terminal decreases the check period(S20). Meanwhile, if the AGC variation is smaller than the preset variation width, the moving picture terminal increases the check period(S21).
