Water-soluble or water-dispersible polymers which contain carboxyl groups, possibly in latent form, and side chains of the formula I, <paragraph lvl="0"><in-line-formula>-X-Y&Brketopenst;O&Parenopenst;Alk-O)n-R]k (I) </in-line-formula>where X, Y, Alk, R, n, k are as defined in claim 1, and are obtainable by polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers in the presence of phosphorus-containing compounds and, if appropriate, subsequent polymer-analogous conversion are used as additives in mineral building materials. Such polymers and processes for their preparation are also provided. Also described are polymers which are obtainable by polymerization of vinylaromatic compounds, olefins, cycloolefins and/or dienes as monomers D and anhydrides of ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids as monomers E and which can be used both as starting compounds for the abovementioned polymers and as additives for mineral building materials.
