The sensor includes circuitry for performing two or more processes for detecting respective ambient states. A circuit (12) delivers information relating to at least one ambient state to at least one other processor via a data communication medium (16). The ambient state information is used to control functions that are associated with the detected states. A gas sensor may be combined with a smoke sensor for detecting a fire state.
