PURPOSE: A backlight system is provided in which a light emitting area of a backlight is adjusted so as to efficiently use light per unit time. CONSTITUTION: A backlight system for a liquid crystal display includes an optical source arranged in a straight line on the back side of the display. The optical source emits light to an image region. The optical source is constructed in a manner that a plurality of LEDs(42) are arranged in a straight line. The turn-on time of the plurality of LEDs is controlled to selectively emit light only during an image signal is inputted. The backlight system includes a backlight, an LCP for selectively displaying an image in a region to which light is inputted, and a prism for adjusting light emission angle of the backlight such that the light emitted from the backlight is inputted only in the region.
