Following normal practice, in a machine with a stator (5) winding placed in slots (6) and excited by rotor-mounted permanent magnets (2), the latter would be uniformly disposed at angular positions separated by 360/2P deg., where P is the number of pole pairs. To reduce the tooth effect, or cogging, arising when the magnetic axes of all poles pass simultaneously over the stator slots, the separation is altered by a factor of (1+/- 1/R), (1+/- 1/R) R being the number of slots, and applied (al) uniformly to all but one of the spacings. The cumulative effect of these alterations leads to a value (cl) for the remaining spacing, greater or less than the uniform value. A neutral counterpoise (3) is inserted in this gap. Applications to other machine configurations are described. |
