Extracts of the genera <I>Trichocaulon</I>, preferably <I>T. officinale</I> or <I>T. piliferum</I>, or <I>Hoodia</I>, preferably <I>H. currorii</I>, <I>H. gordonii</I> or <I>H. lugardii</I> for the treatment of diabetes are described. Typically the extracts are generated by solvent-extraction and chromatography. Most preferably the extracts yield steroidal glycosides. Alternatively synthetic steroidal glycosides may be used either alone or in combination with other anti-diabetic medicaments.
