PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate setup work on an upper tool rest, increase the precision and efficiency of machining, and modularize the structures of a tool rest and a tailstock. SOLUTION: A lathe 1 has a rectangular parallelepiped bed 2, a first headstock 5 arranged on a vertical front face 4 of the bed to support a first main spindle, a horizontal upper slideway 10 formed on a top face 3 perpendicular to the bed front face and extended in a Z-axis direction parallel to an axis C1 of the first main spindle, and a first tool rest 13 movable in the Z-axis direction under the guide of the upper slideway and also in an X-axis direction perpendicular to the Z-axis direction and mounted with tools 34 and 35. The bed front face preliminarily has areas where a first front slideway 11 and a second front slideway 12 extending in a vertical attitude in the Z-axis direction can be formed, in a first position corresponding to the height position of the first headstock and a second position a given distance under the first position, and the first and second front slideways are formed in the areas.
