The release mechanism has a backrest release (11) for releasing the pivot arms (5) between the seat part (2) and the backrest (3) of the passenger seat on either side, operated via a manual operating element (20), which is also used for releasing a seat release (24), allowing the seat part to be removed from the automobile body. An independent claim for an automobile passenger seat with a fold-down backrest is also included.
