A liquid crystal display (200) comprises a 1024 - 1021 gradation conversion operating section (1) for subtracting the higher-order two bits from 1024(=10 bits) gradation image data A(1024) to produce 1021 gradation image data Y(1021), an adjusting four gradation level candidate storage section (22) and a random number generating circuit (3) both for selectively outputting randomly adjusting four gradation levels DELTA 1p to DELTA 4p, DELTA 1q to DELTA 4q, DELTA 1r to DELTA 4r corresponding to the lower-order two bits Y(1021_d2) of the 1021 gradation image data Y(1021) for each of the segments (p, q, r) constituting one pixel for every frame interval, an adder (23) for adding the higher-order eight bits Y(1021_u8) of the 1021 gradation image data Y(1021) to the adjusting four gradation levels to output 256 gradation image data D1p to D4p, D1q to D4q, D1r to D4r sequentially, and a 256 gradation three-segment monochromatic liquid crystal display panel (24). Any gradation conversion table is not required, and hence the cost is low. It is possible to display an image easy to view in a pseudo way with a number of gradation levels larger than that of the display panel.
