The invention relates to a hydraulic lift buffer, whereby means (11-18; 20, 21) for the damping of shocks exerted upon a piston rod (12) are arranged in a housing (20). A hydraulic fluid (14) serves as hydraulic medium, the level (44) of which in the hydraulic lift buffer is monitored conventionally by means of a dipstick. According to the state of the art the dipstick must be unscrewed from the housing for the above. According to the invention, the necessary level checking process for the hydraulic fluid (44) may be simplified, whereby a measuring device (9) is arranged on the housing, which comprises a reading point external to the housing, by means of which the level (44) of the hydraulic fluid (14) can be determined without opening the housing (20). The level (44) of the hydraulic fluid (14) can thus be directly checked without any prior disassembly work. An opening of the housing is thus only necessary when hydraulic fluid must be added.
