PURPOSE: A glow plug for diesel engine and preheating method is provided to achieve an improved starting ability and combustion efficiency by installing a temperature sensor to the glow plug and controlling operation of the glow plug according to the temperature of combustion chamber. CONSTITUTION: A glow plug(1) comprises a tube arranged inside of a plug body in such a manner as to be exposed downward; a coil incorporated into the tube and which heats by the power; an insulator filling the space between the coil and the tube; and a temperature sensor(5) attached to the inner wall of the tube and connected to an electric wire penetrating through the plug body, wherein the electric wire is connected to an output terminal mounted onto the plug body. A method comprises the steps of sensing "on" state of a key switch(8); operating the glow plug if the key switch is "on" state, and displaying "preheating on" message onto an LCD(10); displaying "starting enabled" message if the temperature sensed by the temperature sensor attached to the glow plug ranges 700 to 900 Deg.C; stopping operation of the glow plug if the sensed temperature is maintained at 700 to 900 Deg.C for a predetermined time period, and displaying "preheating completed" message onto the LCD; and re-operating the glow plug if the sensed temperature is lower than 700 to 900 Deg.C.
