PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet recording medium having a rough surface feeling fitted for forming an image such as a picture or a character by an ink jet recording method and especially suitable for a case using pigment ink. SOLUTION: The ink jet recording medium is constituted by providing at least one ink receiving layer containing pigment and a binder as main components on at least one surface of base paper. The surface roughness of the ink receiving layer is 9.0 μm or more under a measuring condition of PPS (PARKER PRINT-SURF) S(soft packing) 5 kgf/cm2 and 7.0 μm or more under a measuring condition of PPS S 10 kgf/cm2. The center line average roughness (Ra) thereof is 3.0 μm or more and the Oken type smoothness thereof is 30 sec or less.
