PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To retrieve a database in an easy and proper way. SOLUTION: A retrieval request analysis part 40 receives retrieval request information form a client terminal, analyzes the retrieval request information when a retrieval command shown by the retrieval request information is found to be an optional retrieval command and then judges whether the file name to be retrieved is designated by means of a wild card. When the file name is designated by means of the wild card, a retrieval management part 42 controls a database management information acquisition part 45 to acquire the information on a file storing the data groups constituting a database and produces a file information table 43. Then the part 42 acquires the information on the items added to the data groups constituting the database to produce an item information table 44 and also produces a retrieval command in response to the data to be retrieved.
