A method for producing a captive nut with an improved grip to the mounting panel uses square cut blanks which a preformed by a press operation and punched to form the mounting hole to take the screw fitting after cutting the thread. The nut is pressed into a hole in the mounting panel and the lip is pressed to grip the edge of the mounting hole.
