The bottom end of the gear housing (1) has a sealable opening with dimensions specially chosen so that during the assembly of the unit, the variator and its mounting frame can be fitted inside the housing prior to the unit being mounted in the vehicle. The unit includes a variator with two input discs and two output discs extending coaxial to the input shaft, each disc having a toroidal-shaped inner surface, and each input disc combining with an output disc to form a pair, the two output discs being arranged mirror symmetrical and next to each other. Friction wheels pivotally mounted between the inner surfaces of the discs in the pairs are used to transfer torque from the input disc to the corresponding output disc in the pair. The variator is mounted in a power frame, comprising top and bottom brackets, a cross-member and a bearing support part that joins the two brackets together.
