SYSTEM AND PROCESS FOR DETECTION OF WEAK CYLINDERS IN A DIESEL ENGINE

A system (10) for detecting conditions indicative of substandard performance of cylinders (24) in a diesel engine (12) includes an engine control unit (1 4) disposed in operable communication with the engine (12) and a computer (16) disposed in informational communication with the engine control unit (14). T he engine control unit (14) is in operable communication with the engine (12) through a communication element (18). The system (10) measures the required fuel with all cylinders (24) operating and enables a recommendation to be ma de with respect to corrective or a maintenance measures that should be undertak en with respect to the cylinder (24). A method for utilizing the system (10) includes comparing fuel requirements of the engine (12) operating under powe r of all cylinders (24) and under the successive arrest of each of the cylinde rs (24). The process is repeated until each cylinder (24) is individually remov ed and all of the data can be compiled and considered to determine the performance of each individual cylinder (24).
