PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-performance compact real image type finder optical system whose whole size is small in a thickness direction and whose size on an object side from an eyepiece is small in the thickness direction as a real image type finder optical system having an image inverting optical system. SOLUTION: This real image type finder optical system is provided with an objective lens system 10 having positive refractive power as a whole, and an eyepiece system 40 for observing a real image formed by the lens system 10 and having positive refractive power in order from an object side. The real image type finder optical system is provided with the image inverting optical systems 20 and 30 arranged at a position nearer to an exit pupil side than a lens nearest to the object side in the lens system 10 and arranged at a position nearer to the object side than the lens nearest to the exit pupil side in the eyepiece system and satisfying a specified condition for making an observation image erected.
