PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drum unit for roasting coffee beans or the like, and a roaster using the drum unit wherein coffee beans and the like are roasted so as to make the beans have extremely good flavor. SOLUTION: This drum unit for roasting coffee beans has a ceramic drum 11 and a drive shaft 12 provided with spokes 13 and arranged on the axis C of the drum 11. The other objective roaster using the above drum works as follows: when the material is put into the drum 11 and the drum 11 is rotated under heating, the material in the drum 11 can be uniformly roasted by hot air passing through the drum 11 and far-infrared radiation emitted from the drum 11.
