The steps of cutting the piece of meat off the chunk (2) on the spit (5) and then cutting this piece into smaller pieces are both carried out mechanically rather than by hand. A method for converting a product (especially a meat product) into smaller pieces comprises (A) cutting a piece off a processed chunk of the product, (B) leaving the cut-off piece to stand, and (C) converting the cut-off piece into smaller pieces. Steps (A) and (C) are carried out mechanically. An Independent claim is also included for the machine used to carry out this method, which includes means (4) for holding the chunk in place and mechanical means (11, 23) for carrying out steps (A) and (C).
