PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gas sensor scarcely bringing about a problem such as a layer peeling or the like even by applying a thermal impact or a cold heat cycle under more severe conditions by further upgrading the adhesive properties and the durability of a ceramic protective layer covering the electrode of a sensing element. SOLUTION: As the materials of the ceramic protective layer 2p, a magnesia alumina spinel component, an excess magnesium oxide component not participating in the magnesia alumina spinel component and a zirconium oxide are contained. Thus, the adhesive properties and the durability of the layer can be further improved. The problem such as the layer release or the like is scarcely brought about even by applying a thermal shock, a cold heat cycle or the like to the sensing element 2.
