A wall (5) of water-permeable material such as sand extends vertically downward and is joined to drains (2) also of sand, spaced equally apart. A horizontally extending drainage pipe (6) is positioned near the underside of the wall which extends 6-7 meters from the surface (1) and water is sucked from the pipe by a pump to extract water from the soil surrounding the wall and the sand drains.
