PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of a step in a reproduced original image reading, while an original is being fed. SOLUTION: An image reader is provided with a long image sensor 10, having plural sensor substrates 11 connected in series. The respective sensor substrates 11 of the long image sensor 10 are arranged so that reading directions become opposite to those of the adjacent sensor substrates 11. Image information, which is read by one reading direction in the respective sensor substrates 11, is stored in a first line memory 14 and image information, which is read by the other reading direction, is stored in a second line memory 16. A first memory controller 15 and a second memory controller 17 read respective pieces of image information in the directions similar to the reading direction, the whole image information is made into a single line and is outputted.
