PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shift unit for automatic transmission capable of selecting a shift range without increasing dimension of the whole of the operating device. SOLUTION: This shift unit has a main gate 12 arranged in the fore and aft direction of a vehicle and for guiding a selector lever 5 to a range position corresponding to each range or P, R, N, D and a sub gate 15 extended in the car cross direction from the D range position of the main gate 12 and for guiding the selector lever 5 to a shit range selecting position near the end of the sub gate. In the condition that the selector lever 5 is changed to the shift range selecting position, a shift range for deciding the shift range of an automatic transmission is changed to a wider shift range per each time when a first detecting switch 32 is turned on, and the shift range is changed to the narrower shift range per each time when a second detecting switch 33 is turned on.
