A method of chromatographically detecting sample ions by regenerating a stationary phase

A method of detecting sample ions in an aqueous mobile phase comprises flowing the sample ions and the mobile phase through a stationary phase and applying an electrical potential across an ion exchange packing material includec in the stationary phase to thereby initiate electrolysis of water. The stationary phase is then, at least partially, regenerated by flowing of the electrolysis ions across the stationary phase. In a further aspect, the stationary phase is at least partially regenerated in the presence of sample ions.
