In base-catalyzed oxyalkylation of alkanol(s) (I) with alkylene oxide(s) (II), a basic aluminate (III) is used as heterogeneous basic catalyst. Independent claims are also included for (a) oxalkylated alkanols (IV) produced by this process; (b) laundry and other detergents containing (IV) as nonionic surfactant component, (c) fuel additive concentrates containing (IV) as carrier oil; (d) fuel compositions for internal combustion engines containing (IV) as carrier oil component in a liquid hydrocarbon fuel; (e) the use of (III) as catalyst for oxyalkylation of (I) with (II).
